Snow Business…

December 16, 2011

Ordinarily, I wouldn’t post an advertising spread like this on my blog. And not because I don’t think this is an effective photograph, in fact, my client BJ’s Wholesale Club has gone on to sell record amounts of these products since this was printed in their advertising mailer. And still counting.

But what truly makes this so blog worthy is the fact that we shot this on a blisteringly hot day this past August. Yes, you read that correctly. On a 90 degree day this past summer, myself and a talented group of prop stylists assembled up in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, and began an eight hour process of creating a “Snow Scene” that would be used to market these very necessary items to fight the harsh winter weather in our nations north-east.

What you are seeing here is roughly 100 pounds of fake snow that had to be meticulously prepared in large barrels, and painstakingly placed to create this post blizzard scenario that many know all too well. Combining some genius retouching for background and scale, this all came together just beautifully and even better than I had imagined it could.

Mayfair USA -

March 9, 2011

I wanted to post this to illustrate the wide range of challenges that come with being a commercial photographer. One day you’re photographing mermaids, the next an international magazine cover…..and the following, dishes and silverware. I get asked all the time what projects are my favorite to shoot, and I never really have an answer. And that’s because it’s the diversity of the work that keeps me going, continuing to learn and grow, while never taking anything for granted.

If you’ve got a project you need to discuss, please give me a call….and if you’d like to see more of my work, feel free to visit my website.

BJ’s Spring Catalog -

March 16, 2010

Looking at these images it’s easy to imagine the sun on a cloudless 70 degree day, smothering you with warmth as March comes to a close. And if you are imagining that, then we have done our job. With a two month process of location scouting, layouts, casting calls, production meetings, conference calls, quotes, shooting schedules, weather contingencies, post production, retouching, design changes, copy writing, copy proofing, press checks and printing, this “Spring” catalog shoot actually took place the first week of January. And did I mention cold? Cold as in a cold front that gave us 5 consecutive days in the 20’s, with a wind chill of nose numbing proportions to boot.

Shot on Hilton Head Island for BJ’s Wholesale Club, we managed to get what was needed AND make the client very happy….always a good combination. And let me just give props to the incredible models who managed to give us “warm” expressions while fighting hypothermia. I’m pretty sure we wiped Wal-Mart out of Snuggies.

Below is just a small representation of the end result, and if you happen to be one of the 5 million people who will be receiving this in their mailbox, you now have the inside scoop!

It’s in the details -

If you’re a business owner today, you no doubt understand the importance of packaging and printing that sets you apart from your competitors. And if you find yourself scratching your head, not knowing where to turn, give my good friend Jeri Presser a shout. Jeri and I go way back and when she decided her site needed a fresh look, she approached me to shoot samples to showcase her work, some of which are shown below. While certainly not the most challenging photography technically, it was important to create interesting images that in no way overshadowed the subject matter. Not the easiest balance to achieve, but I’m pretty pleased with what we accomplished.

Keep an eye out for the new and improved Presser & Associates website coming soon!
